“Artistic exile” and professional failure: Brazilian visual artists in New York in the 1960s and 1970s”

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to discuss the flow of Brazilian visual artists to the United States in the 1960s and 1970s as a complex collective phenomenon which we have called "artistic exile". In order to analyze it, we understand that the increasing influence of the United States on the arts and on the Brazilian culture was responsible for attracting Brazilian artists to that country. However, despite the means used to draw these artists, the New York scenario did not become more inclusive and open to those who arrived there, therefore turning this "artistic exile" into an experience of professional failure for many who tried it.
