JONATHAS DE ANDRADE’S CLOSE-QUARTER COMBAT WITH SPECULAR IMAGES

ABSTRACT

Jonathas de Andrade’s work explores echoes of the colonialist past, especially in Brazil’s Northeastern population and imaginary, as well as the cultural heritage of the modernist project that marked Brazilian architecture and urbanism in the second half of the 20th century. His oeuvres create a short circuit of utterances and temporalities, generating an overlap between the body of the image and the image of the bodies, putting into operation the cartography of cities and the mapping of subjectivities. In this article we provide a brief overview of the artist trajectory, concentrating on the following selected works: Amor e Felicidade no Casamento (2007), Educação para Adultos (2010), 4000 disparos (2010), Tombamento (2013), ABC da cana (2014), O caseiro (2016) and O Peixe (2016). We will use a theoretical contribution from writers such as Rancière, Foster, Bosi, among others.
