Outlining a definition of Brazilian tragedy: Nelson Rodrigues’ Álbum de família meets the Modernism of the 1970s

Abstract

This work aims to analyze, by critical and close reading, three Brazilian dramas set in two historical moments of modernist ebullience - both happening in Brazil in the 20th century - and which had in common the subject of the family. From that, the aim was to map the particularities of what could be a Brazilian tragedy, when compared with other dramatic forms that later flourished on national soil. The dramas are Álbum de família (1945), by Nelson Rodrigues, the tonal axis of the analysis proposed here - from it will come an attempt to define tragic drama -, Em família (1970), by Oduvaldo Vianna Filho, and Hoje é dia de Rock (1971), by José Vicente.
