Tempera, abstraction and resistance in Alfredo Volpi

ABSTRAT

This article aims to point out some central transformations in Alfredo Volpi’s painting during the 1940’s in order to reflect on the tempera’s role in his work and the consequences that the painter got with the use of this “primitive” technique, which is a kind of simplification of the paint, in the critical dialogue that his artwork had with the Brazilian modernity, Modern Art and with the artistic field of the time.
