ABSTRACT
This article discusses the text “Pintura e Portinari” by Mário Pedrosa, published in March 1935 and still unknown by a significant number of Brazilian art historians. It also aims to situate this essay in the context of the artistic debate in Brazil during the 1930s, and to present Murilo Mendes’ response later that same year.
