This paper intends to analyze the ontological question at the cinema as theorized by André Bazin from new researches in Art History developed by Hans Belting. With the writings of this author, we will see that the belief in the cinematographic image surpasses the technical support and its mechanical genesis, as stated by Bazin, and has its origins in the Christian culture that diffuses the belief in the image as a proof of the Savior existence. Therefore, it is established an identification among material support, representation and reality that will echoes in the cinema.
