This work reflects on the process of evaluation of Higher Education, with emphasis on the Course General Index (ICG) in Higher Education Institutions (IES) in the state of Bahia. Integrated to the National System of Evaluation of Higher Education (Sinaes), the ICG considers several aspects to measure the quality of IES. However, the ICG, which was to be a quality index and would be added to other indicators for the evaluation of Higher Education, has become an instrument to promote the ranking of IES, both public and private, causing, thus, serious challenges for institutional management. So, in order to reflect on such issues, a bibliographic, documentary study was carried out, with the presentation of statistical data from IES in the state of Bahia. The objective is to broaden the discussions and reflections on the theme.
