Appropriate technology: reflections and challenges of the new 3D methodologies in Archeology and Conservation. The case of the “Landscape in White Archeology and Antarctic Anthropology Project”

Abstract

Technology has impacted the world in different ways. In this context, it should not surprise us that archeology and conservation-restoration in recent decades have undergone theoretical, methodological, and technical changes. All these transformations bring “new” possibilities to—with some exceptions—facilitate and improve research and preservation of recovered materials. However, at the same time, we have to learn to deal with “new” problems and challenges. The authors’ proposal presented in this article seeks to find a balance between these extremes (solutions-problems), reflecting on what aspects of new technologies can be taken advantage of, understanding them to be tools that can be used in our daily work, but at the same time, affect our investigation from a dialectical relationship. To exemplify the discussion, we will present some theoretical-methodological reflections on the application of 3D technology in contexts such as research, extension, and conservation-restoration within the Landscape in White Antarctic Archeology Project coordinated by LEACH-UFMG.
