The use of quartz by ancient societies in the Serra de Carajás, Amazon, Pará

Abstract

This article aims to present the results of the analyses conducted in the quartz industries present in the collections of two archaeological sites: Capela and Ananás, located in the region of Carajás, southeast of the state of Pará, northern Brazil. The applied method is based on technological analysis, and the main concept used is the Chaîne Operatoire, developed by the French School and adapted for this work. Through the results obtained, it was possible to observe the choices and intentions of the old human groups regarding the management of these raw materials, which are mainly the production of small, thin, and elongated flakes often used without major transformations, knapped with hard stone hammer and percussion on an anvil.
