The ‘material civilization’ in the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Service regional museums: confluences between the creation of the Diamond Museum and Juscelino Kubitschek’s museological imagination

Abstract

This paper analyzes the institutionalization of Brazilian regional museums and its impacts on Juscelino Kubitschek’s (1902-1976) museological imagination. The aim is to observe the resonances of regional museums created by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Service (SPHAN) and the singularities of these projects in the Brazilian museological context. Through document analysis and bibliographic review, the study reconstructs decisive moments in the conception of regional museums based on the concept of material civilization and the creation of the Diamond Museum in Diamantina, Minas Gerais. The analysis demonstrates the assemblages among the trajectories of Juscelino Kubitschek and Rodrigo Melo Franco de Andrade when they forged a specific memory about Diamantina and mobilized a reimagined museum aligned with the one projected by SPHAN within the scope of regional museums.
