Identity, cultural heritage, and territoriality: contributions from participatory cartography in educational settings (north of La Rioja, Argentina)

Abstract

Here we present the application of participatory cartography as a methodological proposal for the study, analysis and socialization of cultural heritage. We established spaces for dialogue and bonds of trust between the educational community, local referents, municipalities, and the research team in order to prepare a heritage education project from a collaborative and transdisciplinary perspective. From this, different collaborative mapping techniques were developed to identify relevant, significant, and frequented sites which made it possible to recognize the use and appropriation of the territory by secondary school students in the towns of Anjullón, Pinchas (Castro Barros) and Sanagasta, in the northeast of the province of La Rioja (Argentina). In this way, the cartographic practices provided an account of different ways of inhabiting and perceiving both the space and the local cultural heritage.
