FOREWORD

The International Symposium on Multiparticle Dynamics (ISMD) is a conference series that began in Paris in 1970. The conference is dedicated to the yearly summary of the most interesting results concerning the processes of multiple production of hadrons induced by high-energy photon, lepton, hadron and heavy ion reactions as well as particle astrophysics.

The XXXVI ISMD, or ISMD 2006, was held in Paraty, a charming, well preserved colonial style small town, located in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 02 to 08 September, 2006. This was the first time an ISMD meeting took place in the Southern Hemisphere. We are very proud of being awarded by this task. There were 74 participants from institutes of 16 countries of 5 continents. Altogether 59 talks have been presented in this meeting, both in experiment and theory, which merited enthusiastic discussions. They are presented in this volume in chronological order, concluding with the summary talk by Larry McLerran. We regret not have been able to include all the presentations in this proceedings, mostly because some of the participants were not able to send their contributions in time. This year, we also made an innovation with 7 poster presentations, mostly by young students.

The sponsorship by the following institutions was essential for the organization of ISMD 2006: National Council for Scientific and Technological Development - Brazil (CNPq), São Paulo State Foundation for Research Support (FAPESP), Brazilian Physical Society (SBF), São Paulo University (USP), Brazilian Center for Physics Research (CBPF), Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Institute for Theoretical Physics - São Paulo State University (IFT-UNESP), and Campinas State University (UNICAMP).

We would like to thank all the persons who contributed to the success of this meeting. First, we are thankful to the members of the International Advisory Committee for the valuable advices to organizing the Symposium. We appreciated the competent work of the session convenors, who organized each of the seven sessions we had in the meeting. We are grateful to all the chairpersons who conducted the sessions, encouraging the audience to participate in the discussions. Many thanks to all the speakers, who brought their works to update all the participants in the recent progress in multiparticle interactions. Thanks to all the participants for their fruitful activity throughout the Symposium. Finally, tireless work of the members of the Local Organizing Committee, aided by the secretaries Zélia Quadros and Arlene Linke, was indispensable for carrying out the organization of the meeting smoothly.

Now, in editing the Proceedings, we are indebted to all the referees who helped us in the effort of improving the editorial quality of the volume. We are especially grateful to Prof. Silvio Salinas, the Editor of the Brazilian Journal of Physics, for his encouragement and support. Thanks to Renato Hama who designed both the poster of the meeting and the cover of these Proceedings.
