This paper analyzes the importance of considering the elementary mathematics contents in Mathematics Teacher Degree programs, given the subject of mathematical training of future teachers. Two aspects of elementary mathematics are addressed: historical and epistemological. The study considers theoretical contributions of historians like Andrew Chervel, Dominique Julia and Roger Chartier. Sources for analysis in the research included recent studies on the role of the history of mathematics and the potential of history of mathematics education. Finally, the paper advocates the inclusion of the history of mathematics education as a methodology for mathematics teacher education.
