Didactic Suitability of Official Peruvian Secondary Education Curriculum Materials in Probability

Abstract

Curricular materials constitute a bridge between the planned curriculum and the one implemented in the classroom, mediating student learning. Therefore, it is relevant to for educational research to study their degree of adequacy to the planned teaching processes. Assessing the suitability of these materials requires the development of instruments to guide reflection on the different dimensions that affect the study processes in mathematics. We present a systematic review of the criteria and indicators of didactic suitability to assess the instructional processes on probability within the framework of the ontosemiotic approach, with the purpose of elaborating a guide to assess Peruvian curricular materials of secondary education (students of twelve and thirteen years) in this content. This instrument is applied to analyse the worksheets dedicated to probability of two workbooks that have been developed by the same institution from which the curricular norms emanate. A qualitative methodology is followed, using the technique of content analysis supported by the categories of the Ontosemiotic Approach. The analysis of the worksheets has allowed us to identify some critical points that should be considered in order to optimize their use in the classroom: mismatch of contents with curricular guidelines; predominance of classical versus frequential meaning; absence of articulation of classical meaning with other meanings such as intuitive or subjective; lack of situations involving experimentation, simulation and use of manipulative materials or software; scarcity of contexts to develop probabilistic literacy beyond games of chance; and absence of group tasks that favour interaction between students.
