A new species from genus manihot adans. of the state of São Paulo

This shrubby species was collected at Eugênio Lefèvre, State of São Paulo, in young secondary forest. It is now cultivated at the Instituto de Botânica of São Paulo. The plant is characterized and discriminated from M. pohlii Wawra as follows: dense clothing with yellow hairs on branches, leaves and inflorescence; petiole size, 34 cm; number of leaf lobes, 5-7; shape, oblong-obovate; and chiefly great number and density of flowers in the raceme, greater size of these, masculine 21 mm and feminine 15 mm, and different size of masculine and feminine flowers. This species is also characterized by a scaleform expansion of the petiole extremity, with the same indumentum of petiole, densely pubescent, on the upper limb and present in all the leaves. The foliar buds were treated with saturated paradichlorobenzene solution and fixed in mixture of 1 part alcohol and 1 part acetic acid. For staining and hydrolysis, were used acetic orcein and HCL N in mixture by the Sharma's method. The drawings were made in camera lucida and 2n = 36 chromosomes were found for Manihot jolyana.
