Influence of free iron oxides and organic matter on water retention by soil

Good correlations between specific surface area and hygroscopic water were found for original soil, soil without organic matter and soil without organic matter and iron oxides. Free iron oxides, in a general way, increased water retention while organic matter decreased it.
