Sisal breeding

Agave amaniensis and its hybrid with A. angustifolia were used on a breeding program conducted from 1958 to 1974 at the Instituto Agronômico, Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. The authors obtained 340 fruits out of 1,097 flowers polinated and each fruit produced, average of 126 seeds. The seedlings obtained showed segregation for some characteristics but only those characteristics which interfere with the production or the facility on the handling of the material were considered. All the plants that showed leaf margins with spines were eliminated. Some plants showed ability to produce more leaves and fibers than the common sisal, A. sisalana Perr. Nine of them produced more than 10kg of dried fibers before poling and seven had a mean above 1kg of dried fibres per year, being double that produced by common sisal.
