SUMMARY
The possibility of using cartons (perforated cartons of the TRN-2 type for 10 and 25 kg of potato tubers as a substitute for wooden crates was studied both when these containers were placed in the common potato bins or in refrigerated chambers.
The results from the comparisons made showed that the cartons used were not suitable for the purpose, for they became deformed under compression and the tubers were injured. Furthermore, the piles formed with cartons frequently tipped over. In addition, the deficient aeration provided by the cartons activated sprouting of tubers. This effect was more noticeable in cartons held in the refrigerated chambers than in those placed in the bins at room temperature, but losses due to tuber rots were much more frequent in the latter group.
Seed potatoes tored in wooden crates and kept under refrigeration were in excellent condition as to sprouting and soundness at the end of the tests; tubers in crates placed in the bins at room temperature lost too much weight due to respiration and dehydration.
