Spraying tests were made with several insecticides in an attempt to control the "vira-cabeça" disease of tomatoes (tomato spotted wilt) by killing the insect vector, a species of thrips belonging to the genus Frankliniella. The results obtained indicate that Rhodiatox (Brazilian trade name for a commercial preparation similar to Parathion, containing 5 per cent of p-nitrophenyl diethyl thiosphosphate) and Hexason 2540 M (a mixture of BHC with 2% gamma isomer, 5 per cent DDT and 40 per cent wettable sulfur) were better than tartar emetic or toxaphene, although these were somewhat effective. Based on the results of these tests a tentative spraying program for the control of the disease in local tomato plantings is suggested.
