Productivity of selected lines of dry bean at Mococa

The behaviour of a group of 42 different selected lines of dry bean was observed during the years from 1960 to 1962 at the Experiment Station at Mococa. Twenty five of these tines were analysed every year but only a few of them were included in the three years consecutively. The line 1-208 of the cultivar 'Mulatinho' was taken as standard. It was found that thirteen, two and one selection respectively, surpassed in yield the standard in 1960, 1961 and 1962. Considering only those lines planted consecutively in the three years the following four were superior to the standard 1-208: Pintado, Preto 147, VP 102-1 (Mulatinho) and Creme. These four selections should be considered as the best adapted to that region of the State of São Paulo. The black coated bean Preto 147 in spite of its good yield and field resistance to rust and powdery mildew has little acceptance in the market of São Paulo. Its vigor and resistance are being transferred to lightly colored seed cultivars with good cooking quality but with no resistance to these two diseases.
