An experiment was carried out in 1964 and 1965 in a clayey soil to determine the influence of lime and organic matter on rice (Oryza sativa L.) production, at Pindamonhangaba Experiment Station, Paraíba Valley. Organic matter (cow manure) was applied at the basis of 30 ton/ha/year. Lime was applied at the basis of 6 ton/ha in the first year and 2.5 ton/ha in the second year. There were also applications of fertilizer (NPK), in presence or absence of organic matter and lime. The results did not show response of rice production to lime or organic matter applications. These was, however, a clear response to the mineral fertilizers applied.
