Cardiovascular mortality by gender and age in the State of Paraná, Brazil: 1979 to 1981 and 2006 to 2008

OBJECTIVES:

In this epidemiological ecological study, it was compared the mortality from cardiovascular disease in the state of Paraná, between the three-year periods 1979-1981 and 2006-2008.

METHODS:

Data of cardiovascular deaths occurred in the state of Paraná in the period 1979-2008 were obtained from the Mortality Information System of the Ministry of Health. The magnitude of mortality and the change between the triennium were described using the mortality rates and the relative percentage variation. The Poisson regression model to estimate the change in mortality between the periods was used.

RESULTS:

During the investigation, it was found, regardless of age and gender, reduction in the occurrence of cardiovascular deaths. In both genders, the mortality rates increased with increasing age. Among men, mortality from ischemic heart disease was higher than for cerebrovascular diseases.

CONCLUSION:

The decrease in mortality for the group of cardiovascular diseases may mean greater access to services and diagnostic and therapeutic methods.
