From teaching crafts to high school vocational education in Mozambique: has the idea of polytechnic school finally been materialized?

This paper aims to examine the pedagogical basis of Mozambique's education reform that introduces technical education in basic education and "vocational" subjects in high school, in order to unify school and work. In order to analyze the inclusion of work in school programs, the theoretical framework focuses on Marx's and Gramsci's thinking. A brief historical approach, concerning the socialist dimension of Mozambique's education, introduces the idea of polytechnic education in the country, describing the current context, characterized by productive restructuration. Finally, the question proposed is: do the current changes oriented towards the inclusion of work in basic and high school mean that the idea of polytechnic schools has been materialized?
