ABSTRACT
This paper aims to discuss factors that have collaborated for the lack of fulfillment of one of the main functions of the school: its contribution to the building of life projects or perspectives for the future. To act to build life projects involves imposing interdictions to immediate pleasures as a means to support future rewards; school diploma loses meaning, but it is through it that projections of a future life are built. The references for this discussion are young people from urban impoverished periphery, as well as the schools to which they attend.
