Abstract:
This paper presents different angles of the debate on the status of the teaching profession in Brazil. It grasps the meanings that have been established in educational policies over the past 40 years, in the context of the struggle for democracy. Its focus lies on the proposals developed by political and civil societies, with a special emphasis on those that have been incorporated into national legislation. Therefore, the analysis mainly dwells on the academic debate concerning the links between the recognition/valorization of the teaching profession, teacher education and the quality of education.
