Evaluation of the reactive potential of additions of red ceramic waste and comminuted concrete of CDW in cement matrix

Abstract

In this paper, the reactive potential of additions of red ceramic waste (RCW) and concrete of CDW, besides limestone filler for reference, was evaluated. The pozzolanic potential of the additions was evaluated by pozzolanic activity index (PAI) with lime, performance index (PI) with cement, calcium hydroxide content fixed in the modified Chapelle and characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicated that RCW reached the chemical-physical requirements for pozzolans, PAI with lime, PI with cement and presented weak amorphous halo in XRD indicating low reactivity, however, the material did not attain minimum requirements in the Chapelle test. The concrete powder, although it is not a pozzolan, was submitted to PAI with lime and PI with cement tests and presented compressive strengths below the minimums prescribed in the pertinent standards. This material also exhibited amorphous halo in the XRD, attributed to the C-S-H of the paste of hydrated cement.
