The criteria defined in the study characterize a semi-structured indexing policy for the Library, aiming at the identification of existent problems on subject representation and the establishment of guidelines for indexing whiches coherent and of quality. Adopted guidelines for descriptores presentation are used as evaluation criteria and are concerned with: number of words per descriptor; use of singular and plural synonymous; compound descriptors; homograph or inconsistent terms; descriptors rotation; relationship of redundant subjects; relationship of one subject to its subcategory; descriptors that identify historical periods; subjects compound by geografic identifiers; subject compound by geografic and chronological identifiers. The sample analysed was constituted of 743 descriptors of Plastic Arts. The results were presented on table accompanied by an analysis if each identified problem and related to the standard for presentation of descriptors. The evaluation showed that the bibliographic database indexing presents low level of consistency.
