Open archives have enhanced scientific communication regarding data, information and knowledge transfer. They assemble e-prints from different spheres of expertise and are open to public consultation as well as to automated publishing of research findings. The American experience in areas such as Physics, Mathematics and Computer Sciences has shown both the feasibility and usefulness of open archives as a convergent point to communities of researchers sharing information without geographical or institutional boundaries.
