This paper presents the information management paradigm which came up with the so-called markup languages. A short introduction to SGML is presented and the characteristics and differentials behind the success of XML language - which promises a revolution on Web - are analized. There are also shown the conceptual bases of a new generation of applications of Information and Information Technologies which will democratize even more the access to organized information on the Internet. With the development of ontologies, the evolution of research towards the so-called Semantic Web is mentioned.
