This is an overall study about the utilization of software in automation of Brazilian libraries up to 1998. The paper analyzes the trends of this bibliographic production as to its authorship, type of documentation, means of publication, geographic distribution throughout the years. It also includes a succint description of the main software mencioned in the literature.
