Information representation and economy

This paper discusses the role of information representation in the present information/knowledge economy outlined by the emergence of Internet. In this context, information discovery and evaluation are essential activities for information/knowledge use and re-use. Information discovery is presented as a semiotic process, where representation substitutes the original information and serves to a user as an inferential device concerning its relevance. Information work of developing and systematizing representations of information available in Internet plays an essential role, allowing processes of information discovery, evaluation and use, acting as an intermediate between users with information needs and potentially relevant resources.
