The basic guidelines of a policy for implementing virtual library in Brazil are outlined in this article. Virtual libraries must be connected to Internet in order to make available information sources, according to domestic and international standards and modern technology. An urgent priority would be to connect Brazilian libraries to Internet and to improve the training of information professionals, so that knowledge in this area can be updated and the mechanisms of publishing and information dissemination modernized, as well as the national memory preserved.
