Scientific explanation has been considered as one of the main problems epistemology should attend. Explaning is just an essential operation science deals with. Different epistemological positions related with the problem of scientific explanation and the role of theories and models in scientific explanation are analysed. The implications for science teaching are also considered. Assuming that explanation and its comprehension by students may be improved employing appropriate models, criteria for selecting teaching models are proposed.
