The interdisciplinary potential for Science Education in multiple domains of a historical science case analysis

Abstract:

We propose the multiple domains of knowledge approach to analyze, comprehend, define, and plan interdisciplinary practices in science education. For example, we turn to the historical episode of soda manufacturing in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries. We argue that scientific historical episodes have the potential for interdisciplinary science processes of teaching and learning, provided that their economic, environmental, social, and scientific domains are comprehended. We emphasize the importance of investigating the scientific domain and the social, cultural, and environmental dimensions, and that this strategy could cover a wide range of subjects in the classroom. Therefore, we recommend using this theoretical-analytical method for planning and evaluating interdisciplinary themes arising from historical episodes or contemporary issues.
