The objective of the present article is to survey studies related to the research undertaken involving textbooks and environmental education in order to communicate what is being done regarding the subject, identifying the main challenges. The research shows several deficiencies encountered in the textbook as instrument of support to environmental educational approaches in the school context. However, we have found that the set research studied presents some gaps in its potential contribution towards the enhancement of the textbooks as tools for providing the incorporation of environmental dimensions into the learning process.
