Secondary school students’ understanding of the concept of virus from a Vygotskian perspective

Abstract:

The article focuses on how schools taught scientific concepts during the COVID-19 pandemic and aims to improve students’ comprehension of the concept of viruses. We conducted the research in a secondary school elective course which allowed students to discuss and express issues related to the pandemic environment. The study developed a didactic sequence using a Vygotskian perspective, and collected the data through three questionnaires: a survey of previous conceptions, an intermediate questionnaire, and a synthesis study. The didactic sequence had several benefits for the students, including studying a relevant and concrete subject and the potential to understand concepts related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Data comparison across answers to the three questionnaires showed students' gradual performance in concept elaboration.
