Between ruins and walls: children's perspective on the eviction of a favela in Rio de Janeiro

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the perspective of children about the eviction process of the Metrô Mangueira favela, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, based on fieldwork and workshops conducted both with children who still live there and with some who were resettled in a nearby popular condominium. Narrowing the dialogue between urban anthropology and child anthropology, the research evokes the plurality of children's urban experiences and the need to recognise children as legitimate social actors in the construction of the city. Finally, it discusses the role played by the State in the eviction process, which, instead of watching over the children's rights, acted as a violator of these rights, including the right to the city.
