Nietzsche no Brasil (1933-1943): Da ascensão do nacional- socialismo ao Grande Reich Alemão

Abstract

This essay discusses the reception of Nietzsche's thought by the Brazilian intelligentsia, between the early 1930's and the eve of his birth centenary. Near fifty articles that appeared in the national press are analyzed, among which eighteen were published in Cadernos Nietzsche. To better understand the debate, the role played by the translation of books by some of the philosopher's commentators and the first translations of his works published in Brazil are investigated as well. Amid the complexity of approaches to Nietzsche's though among relevant names in the Brazilian intellectual scene, many of them have erased the association between the German philosophy and Nazism, acknowledging him only as the thinker that had anticipated the immanent tensions of the 20th Century-the "man who was a battlefield," as defined by Brazilian philosopher Mário Ferreira dos Santos in the preface for his translation of The Will to Power, written in 1943.
