O conceito de cultura no período extemporâneo de Nietzsche* * Tradução de Márcio José Silveira Lima

Abstract

The topic of culture is present throughout the whole of Nietzsche’s work and plays a fundamental role in helping us understand his philosophy. For the purposes of this essay, we will present the concept of culture during a specific period of his work, ranging from the publication of The Birth of Tragedy (1872) to the fourth of his Untimely Meditations (1876), which will be referred to as the untimely period. Thus, we are including in this period his opera prima, since the fundamental problems he will combat in the Untimely Meditations are present here: the idea of modernity as a general way of organizing existence, and more specifically, the scientific spirit as the backbone of modern culture which can be traced back to Socrates. Nietzsche presents the criticisms towards modern ideas majestically in the first two Meditations, with the objective of combatting the historicist spirit of the time.
