From Dionysus to Bismarck. Tragedy and Politics in Nietzsche

Abstract:

Starting from the analysis formulated by Alfred Baeumler inNietzsche der Philosph und Politker(1931), the essay intends to highlight the political inspiration ofThe Birth of the Tragedy, by Friedrich Nietzsche. Baeumler’s distinction between the Germanic element and the German element - which would intend to justify Nietzsche’s critique of the State and is almost absent in all of Nietzsche’s work - is objected here. The essay underlines the presence of a political conception inThe Birth of Tragedy, gathered around the concept ofGemeinschaftwhich defines a cultural community at the heart of Dionysus. The Nietzschean opposition of State andKulturis at the origins of critique of Bismarck’s politics.
