OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the prevalence of adult degenerative scoliosis (de novo) in a sample of the population. METHODS: We studied 1149 plain anteroposterior abdominal radiographs in achieved in the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto from July 2008 to February 2009. RESULTS: The prevalence of scoliosis in the adult population sample studied was 1.74%, being higher in the group aged between 60 and 69 years. There was no statistic significant difference (p=0.41) between the sexes, and the average length of the angle of scoliosis was 19.1º. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of scoliosis in the sample of the adult population studied is consistent with the presented results in the literature.
