New single women: echoes of feminism in Brazilian media

The proliferation of cultural products on single women implies an international and contemporary concern about the issue. Brazilian media also draws attention to the new single woman attuned with the literature and filmography on singles over 30s, living in big cities. The emergency of the expression new single women, is rooted in the feminist ideas of autonomy, freedom and independency, opposed to the spinster of the past. In this paper I analyze how lone women are often portrayed in Brazilian media texts through gendered polarizations, age social and geographic position. I also point out the validation of information by academic specialists, mainly from the psych field. Finally, I show how some articles portray is way of life emphasizing loneliness and transiency, operating with other gender biased oppositios
