Captain Gay: a homosexual superhero despite the Military Dictatorship

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the superhero Captain Gay, character played by Jô Soares in the 1980s, considering its emergence and television insertion in a context of repression of homosexualities perpetrated during the period of the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship, focusing on the elements that made him famous and the tensions about the border between playfulness and artivism that arose from his gender performances. Methodologically are used as sources news reports in the big press, interviews and some episodes of this character available on the internet. The research is based on studies of gender, homosexuality and the press.
