A Gender Look at the Cangaço

Abstract

This article presents a reflexive analysis on different ways in which women joined the ranks of the Cangaço and what their entrance meant for society, based on gender studies and their intersectionalities. The data analyzed in the study was collected from books, articles, documentaries, and archives at the Museu do Cangaço de Serra Talhada-PE and focused on contradictions found within the narratives about these women. On one hand, they were a symbol of transgression, breaking with the expected gender roles. But on the other they were constantly accompanied by the violence of the cangaceiros, the police and society.
