SEROLOGICAL EVIDENCE OF INFECTION BY Leptospira bratislava AS THE CAUSE OF REPRODUCTIVE DISORDERS IN SWINE

SUMMARY Sera from 535 sows originated from 25 swine herds, were tested through the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT). In these herds there were reports of abortions, stillbirths and returns to service. Leptospirosis was suspected. Leptospiral antibodies were shown on 113 serum samples. Leptospira bratislava titres were present in 42 será, L. icterohaemorrhagiae in 39 sera. Cross reactivity was found with bratislava and icterohaemorrhagiae antigens in 20 serum samples. Present results showed different serologic patterns of Leptospirosis in pigs in Brazil. L. poaona titres had been the most prevalent, in previous reports. Evidence of infection by L. bratislava has not previously been reported in pigs in Brazil.
