EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF THE SYLICON RUBBER IMPLANT IN BOVINE

Twelve young steers of different breeds with 18 to 24 months had their apical ligament cut to obtain penial shunt for subsequent cirurgical correction . The animais were distributed into two groups and received a silicone rubber implant in the free extremity of the penis to correct penial shunt. In the treatment 1, the animals received prosthesis in corpus cavernosum and between apical ligament and tunica albuginea. In the treatment 2, the animals had the prosthesis fixed between apical ligament and tunica albuginea. The material was well tolerated by the tissues involved of all animals. There was little inflamatory reaction, encapsulating the prosthesis with fibrous connective tissue, which caused a firm and homogeneous adhesion between the apical ligament and tunica albuginea. The animals didn't show any difficulty to exposed the penis and to realize the copula when observed in the presence of females in heat. Their sexual behavior was not affected. Both methods showed to be satisfactory and can be indicated as an alternative option to correct ventral and lateral penile shunt in the bovine.
