This work was conducted in Lages, Santa Catarina state, Brazil, with the purpose of comparing grain yield of bean cultivars when sowed in the recommended planting date and beyond that period, at three plant populations. The planting dates evaluated were: October 5th (recommended period) and December 2nd. The cultivars used were Iraí, BR-6 and Carioca which were tested at 100, 200, and 300000 plants/ha. The grain yield was 57% higher when cultivars were sowed in the recommended planting date than after that period. BR-6 and Carioca showed higher grain yield than Iraí. Increasing plant population did not show a marked effect in cultivars grain yield.
