WHEAT - Agrometeorology Aspects

Wheat is a cereal of utmost importance due its economical value and use as human food. In Brazil there is a potential for expansion of this crop both in the traditional regions where is groun and in the central region of the country. It will depend on government policies to estimulate wheat farmers in order to achieve self-sufficiency (COSTA et al, 1990), since the actual production does not meet the total consumption estimated to be 6,8 million tons. The states Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and the southern part of Paraná are responsible for 50% of the area and 45% of the national production. The northern part of Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo represent 45% of the area and 53% of production. The variation observed in productivity among regions can by and large be attributed to the use of variatyes poorly adapted, and crop management defficiencies. Nevertheless special attention has been given to climatic set backs throught studies aiming to determine the relationship among climatic adaptation, management and productivity.
