The conditions was more frequent in multiparous women and in women who initiated sexual intercourse before the age of 20. A major proportion of women (45.0 %) had not reached menopause. Genital bleeding and abdominal pain were the most frequent clinical manifestations. Cytopathological study revealed a percentage of 60.5 % of stages III and IV. There was a low frequency of in situ cancer (20.6 %), when compared to the frequency of more advanced stages (71.6 %). The proportion of advanced stages as compared to in situ cancer increased over time, which may indicate that an optimal level of prevention was far reality in this region during the study period.
