Abstract
This article presents the process of translating Chapter V: “Gli Indios Apinages, Gaviões, Carayas, Anambés, Indios di tribù sconosciute” [The Apinajés, Gaviões, Carajás, Anambés Indians, Indians of unknown tribes], taken from Una escursione botanica nell’Amazzonia [A botanical excursion in Amazonia] (1901), by the Piedmontese Luigi Buscalioni (Turin 1863 - Bologna 1954), a doctor, botanist and university professor, who in 1898 embarked on a two-year journey to the Amazon region of Pará. The purpose of the trip and its respective account was to seek out and provide scientific information about the fauna, flora and peoples of the Brazilian Amazon. As such, the narrative is imbued with the colonialist thinking of the time, which the translation seeks to problematise.
